Pragmatism is experiencing a resurgence, especially among scholars interested in the cognitive sciences. There is a burgeoning neuropragmatic movement, and prominent figures in embodied cognitive science recognize the relevance of pragmatism. This conference will attend specifically to the pragmatic philosophy and functional psychology of John Dewey and cognitive science.

Papers examining intersections between Dewey and any area in the cognitive sciences are welcome, with slight preference for papers focusing on Dewey and situated, embodied, enactive and extended cognition, along with related areas such as somaesthetics.  Papers dealing with other figures in pragmatic and functional traditions are also welcome, but ideally these should connect in some way to Dewey’s thought and cognitive science.

An edited volume is tentatively planned, and conference papers will be invited for inclusion.
Note that Friday October 16 will be set aside for organized sightseeing, with additional trips possible on other days. Airport pick-up and drop-off in university vehicles will be arranged. The registration fee of 100 U.S. dollars will cover costs associated with sightseeing, airport transportation and so on.  Efforts will be made to help with planning for those wishing to extend their stay in Egypt.  On request, efforts will also be made to house participants with AUC faculty in order to give a fuller Cairo experience.
