CFP: The Reaches of Pragmatism. Summer Institute in American Philosophy
University College Dublin, Ireland. June 8-13, 2015
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS AND EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST
The 2015 Summer Institute in American Philosophy will be held at University College Dublin, Ireland from June 8-13, 2015. This is the first time that the SIAP, organized annually by the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy, is being held in Europe. Appropriately, the 2015 Institute will explore the influences, interconnections, and encounters between pragmatism and other philosophical traditions.
GENERAL INFORMATION
The Summer Institute in American Philosophy is designed for faculty members, early career researchers and advanced graduates in philosophy and related disciplines who are interested in American philosophy in general and Pragmatism and Neo-Pragmatism in particular. Hilary Putnam (via skype) and Robert Brandom will deliver key-note addresses on the theme of the Summer Institute. The daily program will be centered around plenary panels led by a number of distinguished experts, spanning multiple sessions over two or three days. The panels for this year are on “Analytic Pragmatism” (Cheryl Misak, Huw Price, and Jim O’Shea), “Pragmatism and Critical Theory” (Maeve Cooke), “Feminist Pragmatism” (Marilyn Fisher and Charlene Seigfried), “Re-Reading Emerson” (Russell Goodman), and “Pragmatism in China”. Other speakers will be announced in the course of the next few months.
There will also be a number of traditional conference-style sessions, including paper presentations and works-in-progress meetings.
CALL FOR ABSTRACTS (Deadline: March 1, 2015)
At the Dublin SIAP, we invite submissions for papers in any area related to Pragmatism and American Philosophy. Abstracts for conference-style papers or for one of a variety of ‘work in-progress’ sessions are welcome.
Submission Instructions:
Please specify type of presentation from the list below:
Traditional Papers: Papers in all areas of American philosophy are welcome. We will particularly favor papers whose topics are related to the themes of the plenary seminars and the work of our keynote speaker. Instructions: please submit an abstract of 500 words describing the paper in detail. Final papers should be of a length suitable for a short presentation of 15-25 minutes.
Books-In-Progress Submissions: Those working on book manuscripts in areas of research relevant to Pragmatism in general and the theme of the Summer Institute in particular are also invited to present their work. This includes fresh ideas for books just under way as well as books nearing completion, but does not extend to author-critics sessions on recently-published books. Instructions: please submit a 500-word abstract describing your book manuscript, the content of your presentation, your ideas for the format of the presentation.
Dissertations-In-Progress Submissions: Graduate students preparing dissertation proposals, in the dissertation-writing phase, or approaching their dissertation defense are invited to present their work at special dissertations-in-progress sessions. This is a regular tradition at SIAP and one of the most exciting fora to showcase new work that is being developed in American Philosophy at various graduate programs across the country and internationally. Instructions: please submit a 500-word abstract describing the content of your dissertation. We will work with you in advance of the session on general guidelines for preparing the presentation and what to expect. In addition please note: we have a limited number of travel grants available to graduates at the Summer Institute who will be presenting, so please indicate if you would like to be considered for a travel grant which will cover the entire cost of room/housing as well as registration fees. These grants are generously funded by the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy. (See below for more information on the grants).
Experiments-In-Progress Submissions: We invite presentations on projects, collaborations, group work, public philosophy forays, field philosophy work, and other philosophical experiments for the purposes of discussion at SIAP. Some examples: Michael Eldridge’s 2009 group discussion of Obama’s Pragmatism (and see the most recent issue of Contemporary Pragmatism for papers on the topic, some of which were initially formulated at this session). These sessions will be limited in number and are intended to provide opportunities for innovative forms of work, thought, and scholarship in the American tradition. Instructions: please submit a 500-word abstract describing your project, the content of your presentation, your ideas for the format of the presentation, a justification of the project terms of larger issues of outreach and scholarship.
Email your submissions to Sarin Marchetti at sarin.marchetti@ucd.ie.
The submission deadline is March 1, 2015 with decisions to be made by March 20, 2015. If, in order to secure institutional funding, you absolutely need an earlier decision, then please contact Dr Sarin Marchetti and we will try to accommodate you.
The subject line of your email should read: “SIAP 2015 Submission: format type (e.g., Traditional Paper, Dissertation-In-Progress)]”.
Please include the text of your submission as a Word attachment and name it: “Surname_Title”.
